1010 #1098 3 февраля 2014 (изменено) ***Did David Guetta and Armin van Buuren kill dance music with going commercial?*** Of course they didnt...... In this article, im going to describe my view of whats going on atm with our loved dance music industry, commercialism etc, i hope you all will read this through carefully with an open mind! Lately i have come across a lot of people, full with passion for dance music industry, that are bitter, sad and frustrated how its exploited and wrong labeled. In this little piece, I’m going to explain to you all why there is no need for all this negative energy and how its even, as controversial as it might sound, be a positive thing that dance music went commercial. Its easy to be frustrated when you see something you love, become wrongly labeled, and indeed, exploited in a way you never could imagine. You suddenly see your favourite artist making a genre you don’t like, maybe someone promotes a style and you know deep inside, that this is not the real deal. But I’m going to take David Guetta & Armin Van Buuren as a prime example, of how they both created the early foundations to spread dance music globally. David Guetta, started up in paris, as a local resident dj, long before most of us ever heard a house record on the radio, he was doing quite well but nothing out of the extraordinary. Then suddenly, he and his team, started to produce pop records, with a touch of electro house. It didn’t went long before the radio’s embraced it, and of course, the commercial powers of the music industry. David could choose, would he go back to underground, or could he maybe find a way to make house music, the genre he loves so deeply find a way on to the radios world wide? David choose to go the commercial way, and not long after the “underground” establishment of house music made a statement that “this is not house music and its commercial shit”, more or less, that is what everyone was thinking. But you see, David is the man that made “house” available for people who did not yet fully understand it. In Northern America, the radios had for long been dominated by soul, pop, rock and RnB. There was a full generation of amazing young minds, that never had the opportunity to hear dance music unless they were directly introduced to it by a friend or relative. David realised the potential of this situation and started to collaborate with RnB and pop artist and suddenly, slowly but safely, the media eyes turned on to the unexploited market for DJs being rock stars, and with that, comes the big money investors. Surely, we all have our different views on whats the best way to invest into dance music, but we all have the same target, to make it grow, and to make more people enjoy what we love so much. David Guetta managed to trigger an explosion of “EDM” in america & he managed to introduce a way to reach out to the newer generation, that by that time, wasn’t really into dance music at all. Slowly, people started to show up more and more the local clubs where electronic music was played, and in the that moment, once they entered, it was the production managers, club owner and local resident dj responsibility to take care of this, costumer, that was whiling to invest their money into the event. Thats when suddenly, all the branded club shows and festival started to grow in america, it was also the moment, where we, smaller djs, suddenly got a demand to play in citys we never ever could imagined. For the better, the commercial input into the genre we love so much, has had such an impact that the smaller artist, slowly, could make a living out of it, travel around the world, play the music they love and, the most important, giving their fans and to-be future fans, a chance to enjoy the music in their local regions. At the very same time, Armin Van Buuren, started up his radio show ASOT. A radio show, that has become such a super brand that it has become the ultimate nr 1 source, for people to find out what trance, and its associated sub genres is about. Armin Van Buuren, and his team, have managed to take something that has something with extremely little commercial interest into a global phenomenon, where we today, see millions of passionate people tuning into together. If someone would tell me in 2001, that Kazakstan, a country placed in a region of chaos and a history of war, would host one of the biggest trance events in 2014 i would have swallowed my own tongue. It simply didnt exist in any plans…. until the young people of this up and coming asian region, got the chance to hear about trance. You wanna know how? Because Armins commercial trance tracks, finally found a way to to be played in local radios, that only 5 years ago, was dominated something completely different. This commercial exposure opportunity, gave them the chance to create a foundation so strong, that local investors was able to bring down the party of their favourite radio show, that they for many years, only could dream of having. Trance djs, has been given a chance and platform to be able to show people what they do the best. But with this chances also comes an responsibility for us artist and fans, to make sure we really bring the best out of ourselves so we can represent this passion we have, to the full extent of what it can bring to life for this new generation of clubers that are slowly arising out of the pop industry & mtv generation ashes. Because, it is really, a life changing way of enjoying this noisy world, with so many negative factors around us at these times. You see my friends, we are all in this together, wether you listen to trance, dubstep, house or obscure speedcore. We have to respect eachother, and we also have to, despite it sometimes is really hard, eknowledge the fact that commercialism of dance music is a healthy factor if its done the right way. You see, we are in the early period of the expansion of edm, and most of the young new clubers around the world, does not have the knowledge of whats progressive house, uplifiting trance or melbourne shuffle, the simply see it as a fun music to party to, and with this, we have to embrace and really grab our opportunities to showcase our best music. So discussing what genres is what, and why its like that, and then hating on eachother online is just simple a waste of time for all of us! We are in this together, and with our hearts open and staying positive to people who doesn’t yet fully are introduced to the whole sub genres thingy of EDM, the real deal of dance music will shine through, no matter what genre it is. I really hope you all embrace this and share it with all your friends!
